Dr. A Tom Petropulos age 69 of Palos Hills, IL, died peacefully Wednesday evening September 18th, 2019, outside by his beloved garden with family at his side. Loving husband of Katherine Petropulos for over 35 years. Loving father of Elliot, Peter, Steven, and Yanni. Dear brother of Georgia (Tom) Christopoulos, the late Patricia (Aleko) Loukas, and Anastasia (George) Georgiopoulos. Devoted son of the late Elias and Maria Petropulos. Loving uncle of many nieces and nephews. “Athanasios”, as he was born, grew up a subsistence farmer in a mountain village in southern Greece. He grew up loving the land, his horses, the food he grew, and the hard work it all required. He carried these loves with him when he immigrated to America alongside his family at age 18. Days after arriving, he was working and learning English in school. Tom grew to admire America and talked about the “American fairness” that recognized his hard work. His relentless focus and desire led him to be accepted to medical school four years later, eventually becoming one of the first cardiac electrophysiologists in Chicago. He founded the Christ Hospital program of cardiac electrophysiology and the group, Consultants in Cardiology and Electrophysiology. Tom grew the group from a single physician into an 11-physician practice with 70 employees that continues his guiding principle of treating patients as if they are family members, with the utmost care and respect. He cherished his patient practice and emphasized ethical, non-wasteful, medical care. Tom loved the education that shaped his life. He encouraged and promoted education with his time, resources, and many philanthropic endeavors, inspiring those around him to succeed. His humility in his battle with ALS was inspirational. When asked, “Why did it have to be you” he replied in kind “why not me?”. He faced the challenge of his illness as he did his life, with honesty and bravery. May his spirit of love, learning, hard work, patient care, and philanthropy carry on through those he touched.

Visitation will take place Monday September 23rd from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM with the Trisagion Service at 6:30 PM at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church 11025 South Roberts Road Palos Hills Illinois 60465. Amalia Arvanetes

orthodoxlargeAmalia Arvanetes (nee Papanikolaou)

 February 6th,1903 to March 20, 2016

The Greeks of Chicago’s south suburbs lost one of their oldest and most beloved matriarchs on March 20, 2016 when Amalia Papanikolaou Arvanetes passed away at Alden Estates, Orland Park, IL at the age of 113. Amalia was born in the village of Anthohorion, Greece in 1903. She and her husband, Demetrios Arvanetes, raised six children, first in Thoknia, Greece, and then in South Chicago, where she immigrated in 1952.Yiayia Amalia, as she has been known by both her family and fans, loved being surrounded by her large family, and had a hand in raising all eleven of her grandchildren. The stronghold she had on her family was immeasurable, and her no-nonsense manner, dry sense of humor, and the stories that we can all recite by memory will be deeply missed. In addition to her family, Amalia also loved her church, Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, and guided her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in its teachings. She enjoyed reading her Bible and visiting churches and monasteries both in the United States and in Greece. In the 1980s, she fulfilled one of her life-long dreams by taking a trip to the Holy Lands. When Amalia wasn’t traveling, she made her home with, and had the eventual loving and attentive care of, her son and daughter-in-law, John and Barbara Arvanetes, in Orland Park. During her free time, she enjoyed long walks, crocheted, and broke every weekday to watch “Wheel of Fortune.” The show did not have a more avid non-English speaking fan. She watched until the week she died.Amalia was preceded in death by her husband, Demetrios; two children, Katina Arvanetes and Ioanna Stavrianos; two sons-in-law, Triantaphyllos Kotsogiannis and Theofilos Stavrianos; and three infant great-grandchildren, Yvonne Catania, John Stavrianos and Cynthia Stavrianos. She is survived by four children: Vasiliki Kotsogiannis, John (Barbara) Arvanetes, Ifigenia (John) Sgouros, and Nicki (Nicholas) Papanikolaou, eleven grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.

I just thought I’d say
I love you and goodbye
We will miss you dearly
I promise I won’t cry.I will never forget our talks
Conversations on the phone
How happy you were to see me
When I finally came home. You worried so much about me
I worried about you too
I know this is the hardest thing
We’ve ever had to do.I know you’ll always be with me
Wherever I will go
No one needs to show me
I will always know.I don’t know what to do Mom
I never thought I’d loose you
Where I’ll go from here
I still haven’t got a clue.I hope you’ll watch over me
Be my guiding light
Giving me the strength I need
To win this endless fight. You’re my guardian angel Mom
Sitting on my shoulder
Whispering your words of wisdom
To use as I get older.I don’t want to say goodbye
But we’ll meet again someday
We’ll pick up where we left off
Before you went away.

“The moment that you died
My heart was torn in two,
One side filled with heartache
The other died with you.

Remembering you is easy,
I’ll do it everyday
But missing you is heartache
That will never go away.

I hold you tight within my heart
And there you will remain,
Until the joyous day arrives
That we will meet again.”

This Eulogy given by her Daughter Janine Zulanas at the Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at St. Dennis Catholic Church in Lockport on Friday Morning at 10:00 AM

” My Mom Mary Lou Zaccone a women of great courage. A wife, Mother, Sister, Grandma, Aunt, Godmother, Friend.

She was a wonderful role model to everyone she knew.

She lived her life to the fullest.

For those of us lucky enough to be touched and blessed with her values and outlook on life, know that she always put others before herself no matter who you were or what your story was, her doors and arms were always open.

She knew way before any of us, when the gates of heaven were going to bring her home.

Her nephew Mike Orrico was the chosen one, the one who sat down with her to plan the next chapter in her life.

She told Mike please make sure these few things were mentioned in my Eulogy and make it funny….so here it goes.

She wanted all to know that her first dream in life was to be a dancer.  She did LOVE to dance and competed in ball room dancing for a few years.

To get married and have 4 children…… she nailed that one!!

She loved crafts….always had a table or a spot set up with projects in the making, not just arts and crafts but refinishing furniture spray painting anything and everything.

For someone who didn’t drive on expressways, didn’t like to make left hand turns and didn’t drive at night, she sure got around.  Giving direction was NOT a problem for her.

TRADITIONS….she loved them

Butter cookies at Christmas time

Receiving new ornaments every year at Christmas that represented

Highlights of our year.  It was the Christmas gift she loved to give, year after year after year.

Our annual summer vacations to Alpine Valley with friends and family.

Golf cart rides, swimming, bocce ball, and shaving cream fights.

They weren’t lavish vacations by any means but filled with Love & Laughter which made them magical and memorable.

Our one and only trip to Disney World.  She saved her money for years to take us there.

Halloween costumes….if you needed one she had it. Every size, color and style.

Her camera…she always had it to capture all the great moments. Say cheese, smile, don’t pick your nose, stand up straight, don’t move, she never got tired of saying it.

Birthday celebrations every year for us kids and my dad….up until we got married, we could go home and find our birthday dinner of choice, a homemade decorated cake, decorations and presents.  She never missed a birthdays.

Hanging all the laundry on the clothes line in the backyard….crazy at first but it just became part of the landscape.

Her last dream in life was to have lots of grandchildren.  She was blessed with 10, who she got to spoil and watch grow for the past 16 years.  7 boys 3 girls.  Joey, Domenic, Liza, Jason, Joseph, Jake, Jonny, Vanessa, Lauren and Vinny.  You were, are, and will always be her “pride and joy”

SHE SAID SHE LOVED HER GRANDCHILDREN MORE THEN ALL THE STARS IN THE SKY

Her little touches went a long way in the hearts of everyone she knew.

Whether they were our friends, her friends, new friends, family, family friends, neighbors, her home was your home. She always had an answer for everything and her words were filled with wisdom and knowledge to keep you strong.  It was the little things that mattered and stuck….that sometimes became life’s lessons.

My mom fought till the very end without ever letting on how sick she really was.She left us before we were ready to let her go.

She saw and celebrated life like this:

Always pray to have eyes that see the best in people

A heart that forgives the worst

A mind that forgets the bad

And a soul that never loses faith in God ! ”
