Spiro Papageorgakis, 87, of Merillville, IN, passed peacefully in his sleep Saturday morning. Born in Vrondamas, Laconia Greece. He was the beloved husband of the late Bessie (Morikis). Spiro was a loving father of Connie (Arthur) Nicholas, Peter (Barbara) Papageorgakis, Mary (Paul) Metcalfe and Gus Papageorgakis. Proud grandfather to Alexandria, Stephen, Jonathan (Rebecca), Marissa and Christos. Loving son of the late Konstantinos and Konstantina (nee Lukis). Brother of George (Freda) Papageorgakis, the late John (Bertha) Pappas, Theodoros (Katerina) Papageorgakis, Panagiotis and Katerina Papageorgakis and Georgia (Elias) Farlekas. Caring brother-in-law to Katherine Morikis, the late Connie (Christopher) Kottis, Nick (Ethel) and George (Lucy) Morikis. Loving cousin and uncle to many nieces and nephews, as well as an exceptional friend to everyone who crossed his path.
In his earlier years, Spiro took great pride in playing the accordian for the original Greek Lads. He was a masterful gardener and often invited fellow parishioners to his garden to feed their families. He was a known fisherman in the community and was even featured in an article for his propensity for catching more fish than everyone else. The “Greek fisherman” had a playful sense of humor, reflected by telling the newspaper his secret was the Greek flies he was using as bait. In his later years, Spiro combined his love for gardening with his welcoming personality and volunteered at a local market, where he cut pineapples and was affectionately known as the “pineapple man.”
