With deep love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Peter (Taki) J. Maniatis on May 11, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on September 25, 1928, to the late John P. and Bertha Maniatis, Peter was the eldest of four children. He was a proud Greek Orthodox Christian and a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his brother Nick and sister Elaine, and was preceded in death by his brother Jim. He was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country—an experience he held in the highest regard throughout his life. After his military service, Peter worked for many years in the family’s doughnut business before making a bold change at age 40 to pursue a new path in real estate and custom home building. Through determination and hard work, he built not only homes but a respected career and reputation. He continued to work passionately into his nineties, finally stepping back at the age of 92. Peter shared a remarkable 70-year marriage with his beloved wife, Joan Maniatis. True to his character and determination, he fulfilled one of his final wishes—celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on April 23, 2025, surrounded by the love of family. It was a beautiful and unforgettable moment. He was the proud and loving father of three sons: John (Natalie), Lee (Tara), and Bill (Jennifer). His legacy lives on through his six grandchildren: Peter John, Nathaniel, Mia, Peter William, Margo, and Sofie. Peter will be remembered for his enduring support of his family, his quiet strength, and his signature look—always dressed in a suit and tie, even for a day at Wrigley Field cheering on his beloved Cubs. A memorial service will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 2:30 PM, where Peter will be laid to rest with military honors. In every suit he wore, every home he built or sold, and every sacrifice he made, Peter showed what it means to live with a purpose. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
