Sally Orrico of the New Lenox/Palos/Hickory areas and formally the West side of Chicago, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, January 10th with family at her side. Baptized Santa Carmella Arrigo 1932 to Carmen James and Mary Grace Arrigo.
Sally was raised and educated in the Catholic/ Italian neighborhoods near the West side of Chicago with brothers, Joe, Jay and sister Mella. These same neighborhoods were where she met the love of her life, Mario. Streetcars, dance halls, and Riverview Amusement Park of Chicago are where the courtship began. Like most of the young people of that era, a modest wedding, and a trip to Florida for their honeymoon were what they could afford.
They settled in amongst the aforementioned neighborhoods to start a life and a family. Together they brought into this world Mario Joseph in 1953, Carmen James 1955, Santa Marie 1960, and Michael Joseph 1969. From the West side to Berwyn to Hickory Hills, they raise a family full of love and faith and most of all Italian tradition.
Sally kept a watchful eye and made a strong effort to ensure the family attended church regularly and were active members of their parish community Saint Patricia. With their older boys now married and starting families of their own, Mario and Sally changed addresses a few times within the Hickory/Palos area, finally settling on a three flat building in Palos Hills.
This building was soon to be ground zero for the Orrico/Arrigo families. Not unlike many of the West side Italian families where she was raised, Mario and Sally had the privilege of sharing a roof with their parents. The Arrigo’s upstairs and the Orrico’s downstairs and Mario and Sally right in the middle. Grandchildren abundant at this point and the doors were always open to family and friends. Christmas Eve and holidays would soon occupy three floors and the entire extended family close, just the way Sally wanted it. Caring for her grandchildren and being close to her parents is what brought joy to her most during this time.
With parents gone and grandchildren off to college it was time for her and Mario to start a second act. A summer home in Door County that she truly loved, except for one thing. There was not enough of her family near to share it with. Eventually they followed the youngest son out to New Lenox and began round two of spoiling the grandchildren. Whether right down the block or out to Lombard, the second group would not be denied. Years past and great grandchildren found their way to Sally’s lap and once again a revolving door of visitors for her and Mario.
It was in 2018 when she suffered a broken heart and found herself alone. Without Mario, their house no longer felt like a home. Reluctant to leave, she found comfort under the roof of her only daughter and once again the laughter, the loud, and love filled her life. At 93 she slowed down and did not get out much but the revolving door never stopped turning.
A woman who left high school to work, she was a beautician by trade with a shop in the basement, waitressed banquet tables, a teller at the local bank, worked in the Jewel deli and bakery and finished up in Carl Sandburg High School cafeteria. She was a top-notch investor, a magnificent cook, one of a kind homemaker and as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She Never stopped working. She Never stopped saving. She never stopped trying to get ahead. She would not be denied any opportunity to give her family everything that she could. She was grateful at the end with no regrets and very proud of the things she accomplished in life and the family that she raised…
