Lance W. Ostby, 74, passed away on May 26, 2023 from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder. He was born on January 21, 1949 and raised in Lansing, IL. Lance attended Thornton Fractional South High School and Chicago State University.

He was a talented carpenter and owned a construction business for many years, in partnership with his son Jason. Lance would later say that these were the best days of his life, working side-by-side with Jason. Lance lived his life one day at a time, and was grateful for more than 30 years of sobriety. He was a member of AA Homewood 17 Animal House. It was there that he met his loyal friend Dan Callahan, who provided daily support to Lance for the past few years as he battled his illness. Our family is thankful to Dan and his family for their kindness and generosity.

Lance was preceded in death by his parents Mary Ellyn (nee Vandenoever) and Kenneth, his wife Ellen (nee LaPasso), his siblings Kathryn, Kenneth and Keith, and his son Joshua.

He is survived by his son Jason (Jill) and his sister Kimberly Kaminski (Glen). Lance was an adoring grandfather to Jacob, and a loving uncle to Kristine, Sandra, Michele, Arynn, Mary and Melanie.

Lance will be remembered for being well-read, having a passionate stance on history (most especially his Norwegian heritage) and current affairs, his quick wit and, most importantly, always being patient and present for those in his life when called upon for help and encouragement.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the COPD Foundation (copdfoundation.org) in Lance’s memory, or to the Friedreich’s Ataxia Foundation (https://www.curefa.org) in memory of Joshua Ostby, Lance’s son. Orrico Kourelis Funeral Services Inc. entrusted with all arrangements.
